Watch out Councils – Part 1

See yesterdays BBC article re Barry Payling of Rotherham who managed to bill British Gas £2,000 for wasting his time – full article here – http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-10891635 . What does this precedent set for UK Councils?

As the article says, this is an ex-gratia payment that doesn’t set a precedent, either for British Gas or anyone else. An organisation can choose on a case-by-case basis to make a gracious payment to someone without being obliged by law or policy to do so in future.

If councils want to make customer service commitments that include compensating people for wasted time they’re free to do so but I don’t know any that do.
